Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird define the modern sports power couple. Rapinoe, a World Cup winner with the USWNT, and Sue, a five-time Olympic gold medalist, have used their platform to advocate for, among other things, racial equality and LGBTQ+ rights. They also faced a former president of the United States and won.
Rapinoe and Bird have also served us a list of #couplegoals moments. Following her fifth Olympic victory, Sue ran into the stands and shared a sweet hug with her bride-to-be. In 2019, it was Rapinoe who ran into the stands to kiss Sue of hers as she celebrated her second Women’s World Cup win.

Megan was engaged when she met Sue at a Rio Olympics photo shoot.
Despite playing and living in Seattle, Megan and Rio had never met before the Rio Olympics. The couple first crossed paths at a photo shoot for the national team. Rapinoe’s attempt to create a fluid front line failed.
“We passed each other a little bit and she was like, ‘Oh, hi! Ready for your game?’” Bird said. nbc. “I walked away like, ‘why do you say that?’” Megan said. “I made a bad impression.” Megan’s bad impression did little to dampen the attraction between the pair.
Rapinoe then slid into Bird’s DM to applaud her for supporting the Black Lives Matter movement. DMs soon became text messages and hangouts at the Olympics. While the USA basketball team was shining, the soccer team was faltering.
For the first time in the history of the women’s soccer team, the team failed to medal at the Olympics. Meanwhile, Bird won hers her fourth Olympic gold. At the team’s victory party, Sue’s teammate Diana Taurasi noticed Bird’s attraction to Megan.
“Sue would just go back to [Megan’s] table,” said Diana. GQ Magazine. Megan and Sue met in Seattle for lunch after the games. As the couple had drinks in Chicago the following September, they finally recognized their romantic spark.
Rapinoe was engaged when she met Bird, but she and her then-fiancée had a rocky relationship. In her memories, A life, Megan admitted to cheating on her fiancée emotionally but not physically. She ended her engagement before having physical contact with Sue.
Megan said GQ Magazine who knew from the first moment that Sue was the one; she just needed several dates to confirm. “I immediately thought, ‘Oh, this is my house,’” Rapinoe said.

Megan and Sue instantly became stronger and better. Sue hadn’t come out before meeting Megan, but she finally did when she announced her relationship with Megan in 2017.
“I’m gay,” said Sue. ESPN. “Megan is my girlfriend… These are not secrets to people who know me.” Rapinoe had come out publicly in 2012, stating that it was someone’s personal decision when to do it. “It happens when it happens because that’s what feels good,” she said.
Rapinoe’s public support for Colin Kaepernick’s protest against police brutality shocked the nation. She was the first white professional athlete to kneel during the national anthem. Soccer’s governing bodies turned a blind eye to her first protest, but bombarded her with threats after her second knee.
Megan’s career seemed seriously threatened when she lost her job with the USWNT. “I think everyone said, ‘Okay, if you fade, that’s okay,'” Megan said. GQ Magazine. When the whole world seemed to be against her, Rapinoe leaned on her new love. Rapinoe explained:
“I’m going through this crazy situation with my coach, my career is on the line, I feel wild things and say wild things sometimes. I have never felt insecure in my career like that. [The relationship] I felt safe in this insecure world that I lived in.”
Megan defended brilliantly and rejoined the team better than she left. “It had to be much better than it was before, because [U.S. Soccer officials] They were kind of happy to let this bitch go,” he said.

Rapinoe had no intention of proposing when she headed to Antigua with Sue and seven of the couple’s friends to celebrate Sue’s 40th birthday party. Then one day, as she was sitting on the edge of an infinity pool with Sue in the water next to her, she proposed to him.
“I could feel it,” Bird said. “I knew what was going on.” Before taking the viral photo of her proposal, Sue asked Megan to remove a white hat that she was wearing.
In October 2020, Megan wore one of the rings on her fingers to ask Sue to marry her. The pandemic had allowed Sue and Megan to spend time together doing what normal couples do and training for the Olympics.
When Sue traveled to Florida to play in the WNBA season, Megan traveled with her. “It was either that or not be with you for three months,” Rapinoe said. GQ Magazine. “And that wasn’t happening.” Megan enjoyed her time in Florida, drinking, recording her audiobook, and watching Sue’s games.
Sue also helped her stay in shape. “Even though we play different sports, I think especially as slightly older athletes, you know, we have some of the same ailments: lower hip,” Rapinoe said. Fashion. “It’s good to have a training partner, to break things up.”
Megan and Sue’s training paid off as they both enjoyed stellar Olympic campaigns. Sue won gold and Megan won bronze in their respective disciplines.

It’s a bit surprising that two US Olympic champions in different disciplines haven’t married. That honor could go to Rapinoe and Sue when they get married.
the couple said GQ Magazine that they will have their wedding when it is safe and in a warm place. By doing so, they will have made history, just as they have done in solidarity in the five years they have been together. The couple hopes they can continue to inspire others to live without fear. Megan said:
“I hope people see that it doesn’t have to be such hard work where you’re just a selfless servant. You can have fun, you can be successful. You can do it your way.
Children could be coming in the future, but for now, Rapinoe and Bird want to enjoy a little more of the freedom of a childless life. “Right now we couldn’t even have a goldfish,” Bird said. GQ Magazine before adding:
“We would love to have the kind of life where we can, on a whim, go on vacation or do some of the things that sports keep us from doing. Who knows? Maybe it’s like, ‘Oh, it’s your mom’s birthday. We’re going to see your mom on her birthday.”
