  • Martnez made his first-team – and La Liga – debut for the Basques on August 27, 2011, when he played the complete 90-minute match against Sporting de Gijón. On October 2nd, he scored his first league goal from within his own half in a 2-1 home derby defeat to Athletic Bilbao.
  • Martnez scored his third league goal in the same fashion on November 27, 2011, in a 3-2 away win against Real Betis (in the 90th minute). He remained first-choice in the following Premier League seasons, most notably helping the club’s return to the UEFA Champions League after a ten-year absence in 2012-13 when he scored four goals in 34 appearances. On April 26, 2016, Martnez signed a new five-year deal.
  • Martnez agreed to terms with Athletic Bilbao on 30 January 2018 for €32 million (his contractual buyout clause value and a record expenditure for the purchasing club) until 2023; the cost was around half of what Manchester City paid for Aymeric Laporte on the same day. On February 4th, he made his debut, featuring in Girona FC’s 2-0 domestic league loss.
  • Martnez received two penalties for foul tackles in two domestic league matches in October 2018, both of which resulted in the opening goal and were granted following VAR reviews — the first in a 3-1 home loss to his previous side Real Sociedad and the second in a 1-1 away draw against SD Eibar.

  • The referee sent him off, but a VAR review decided that he had not intentionally denied himself a scoring chance, and the red card was reduced to a yellow. Real won the championship with a 1-0 victory after the penalty. Afterward, he was praised in the media for his sportsmanship, as he was seen taking time to thank his many former colleagues.
