controversies
nepotism (parchi)
In 2017, he was selected for the Pakistan national team for the series against Sri Lanka. Many cricket fans accused his uncle Inzamam-ul-Haq of supporting nepotism and called Imam a product of nepotism and many fans used the derogatory team name ‘Parchhi’ for him. He played well and demonstrated his potential, scoring 100 runs in his debut match. Inzamam said that coach Grant Flower and head coach Mickey Arthur had approached him to select him in the team. Inzamam said in an interview,
“When he was first selected for the international team, not many people knew that it was Grant Flower who first came to me and said that he was watching Imam score runs in domestic cricket . Then, head coach Mickey Arthur took his case before the selection committee. His selection has been very important for me and him and each other. But I would like to remind those who are making an issue that when I was not a part of the PCB in any capacity in 2012, I was selected in the Pakistan Under-19 team. In 2014, he was named vice-captain for the Under-19 World Cup and paved a path to international cricket.
Imam became discouraged by these allegations and he stopped talking to his family and friends and confined himself to his room. Talking about these allegations in an interview, he said,
“When all this started happening, I used to eat alone. This was my first tour and you know what it can be like on a first tour. And every time I opened my phone, people were tagging me on social media posts or sending me stuff. I was very frustrated and could not understand anything. I stopped talking to my family because I didn’t want to put any pressure on them that I was facing problems. I switched off and handed over both my mobile phones to my manager and said, ‘I can’t take it, please take them away from me.’ I remember crying in the shower for hours even though I hadn’t even played yet. It’s very easy for young players to become bogged down by self-doubt. The only thing running through my mind was that I haven’t even played yet, what if I play and don’t perform well? Then my career will be over. I don’t step out of my room even a single step, fearing that people outside might harass me, because there is a large Pakistani community in Dubai.
relationships with multiple women
In 2019, a Twitter user posted screenshots of his WhatsApp conversations, accusing him of having affairs with multiple women at the same time. Screenshots were posted on Twitter, portraying him as a stalker and a creep. Many fans came out in his support and many fans expressed displeasure at his behavior. He apologized to the Pakistan Cricket Board and Wasim Khan, managing director of the Pakistan Cricket Board, said,
“The Imam felt remorse and apologized for what happened and admitted his mistake. He said that the matter got out of hand due to misunderstanding. But we told them in clear terms that, although this is their personal and private matter, we expect our players to adhere to the highest standards of ethics and discipline. We do not like to comment on personal matters of any player but we expect our centrally contracted players to also show more responsibility as ambassadors of Pakistan cricket and Pakistan. “Hopefully we won’t see such incidents again.”
Salary
He was given a C-level contract for the red ball (Test) and a B-level contract for the white ball formats (ODI and T20) in 2022.
