As she continues to open up about her relationship with her late husband, Hugh Hefner, Crystal Hefner now reveals what the Playboy founder’s “last words” were.
In his recently published book, I only say good things: survive Playboy and find myself, Crystal claimed her husband declared, “I’m fine” while being injected with intravenous antibiotics.
Hugh Hefner died on September 27, 2017, at the age of 91. Although the initial cause of his death was “natural causes,” the magazine mogul’s widow claimed that he had spent his final days battling an “aggressive” E. coli infection. She said the infection was “highly resistant to antibiotics and difficult to treat.”
The book’s debut comes just days after Crystal admitted she was never really in love with Hugh Hefner. “At that moment I thought she was on top,” she said. PEOPLE. “I thought, ‘Wow, if I like everything he likes and I do all the things he wants me to do, then I’m the favorite.’ And I was, but I got lost in the process.”
She also admitted in her book that she was never in love with Hugh. “But I loved this old man the way you are supposed to love your elders,” she wrote. “In the way you’re supposed to love someone who’s nearing the end of a long, complicated life.”

Despite the lack of a proposal, Crystal planned the wedding but broke up with Hugh just five days before their June 2011 celebration.
Hugh Hefner’s widow testified that she sought companionship with Dr. Phil’s son, Jordan McGraw. They had dated before. However, she ended up returning to the Playboy Mansion and marrying Hugh. They married on December 31, 2012.
“I realized I was dealing with a really big power imbalance,” Crystal explained. “It seemed like a world of success and fantasy, but everyone has to sleep with an 80-year-old person. There is a price. Everything has a price.”
Also speaking about her life at the Playboy Mansion, Crystal Hefner admitted that the iconic house is not as glamorous as it seems. “This place really doesn’t clean up that well,” she explained. “And there was mold and after a while it felt a little run down and gross. Too many parties. He was worn out.”
Hugh Hefner’s widow also recalled crying constantly for everything and everyone who lived in the Playboy Mansion. “It was all an illusion,” she said. “To be honest, I don’t even know if I was happy.”
Crystal wrote about her experience at the Playboy Mansion in her book. “Life at the mansion was not the fairy tale I once hoped it would be,” she wrote. “From the outside, of course, it had all the details of a fairy tale. But it wasn’t like that, and everyone who lived there knew it.”
