Busi Lurayi, star of the Netflix series How to Ruin Christmas, died on July 10 at the age of 35. Phil Mphela, a South African television presenter and commentator, appeared to be the first to break the news of her death on Twitter. A South African news source subsequently stated that Lurayi had died at her home in Johannesburg. Her talent agency, Eye Media Artists, released a statement from her family in response to the claims.
The agency said in a post on Instagram:
“It is with regret that we inform you of the death of our dear Busisiwe Lurayi. Busisiwe died unexpectedly and was confirmed dead by medical experts at her home on Sunday, July 10, 2022. The cause of her death is still unclear as we await the autopsy report.”
The agency also claimed it would provide additional information about her death as it became available.

Busisiwe “Busi” Lurayi is best known for her starring role in the Netflix comedy series How to Ruin Christmas, which aired for two seasons. Tumi Sello, one of the main characters of the series, is played by her. The actress also played Thandi Nguni in the 2007 ITV series Wild at Heart. Busi Lurayi had some stage experience before she started acting in TV series, and she also had some theater work. However, according to her IMDb bio, the late actress was credited with approximately eight productions, most of which were appearances in TV series.
Lurayi received several accolades and awards for her performance during her 16-year acting career on screen. For her role as Phumzila in City Ses’la, she won the South African Film and Television Awards Golden Horn for Best Supporting Actress – TV Comedy in 2005. At the same time, many fans flocked to Twitter to pay their respects to the late actress. Several others said her death was a loss to the South African entertainment industry. Busi is survived by her daughter Ayana, with whom she shared numerous photos on Instagram. Local media have suggested that the late actress had a strained relationship with Ayana’s father.
