How many flowers are used in the Rose Parade?

More than a century after the first Rose Parade first began in Pasadena, California, many are wondering exactly how many flowers are part of this long-running iconic event.

According to MapQuest, an estimated 18 million flowers are used on Rose Parade floats. Lyn Lofthouse, a floral decorator with Phoenix Decorating Company, told HGTV that a large float could have up to 60,000 roses.

“We used gerberas, carnations, orchids and things you would see in a garden,” Lofthouse said of the different flowers used. “Like snapdragons, delphiniums and Canterbury bells. “We also use pampas grass and buffalo grass, in addition to dry materials.”

Lofthouse also claimed that Phoenix builds floats for companies such as Wells Fargo, eHarmoney and American Honda. “When the floats return to our building, we take them down and have a team throw the roses. We have had companies that have tried to recover the petals to make potpourri, but by the time they come back here they are already quite dead.”

MapQuest further reports that around 700,000 spectators attend Rose Prade annually. It is part of the “America’s New Year’s Day” celebration. This includes the Rose Bowl Game, which is considered the oldest bowl game in college football. The teams playing in the bowl game this year are the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Michigan Wolverines. The game will begin at 5 p.m.

When asked what stands out most about the Rose Parade, Roker had a few ideas. “It’s like a pu pu plate of things because, first of all, the floats are incredible,” he explained. “The idea that every square inch of the float has to be covered with an organic material (flowers, seeds, nuts, shells or other plant material) does not require paint, fabric or anything. It takes literally thousands of hours to cover each float with this stuff.”

Roker also said there are different participants. You have all these equestrian groups. You have old cars. It is probably one of the most diverse parades in the world, from a display point of view. throughout the Rose Parade.”

Roker added that his best memories are with his Today co-host Hoda Kotb. “We’ve known each other for so long that we can finish each other’s sentences. Getting to do something like that live, you just can’t do it that often. It’s very special that you can work with someone for two hours of live television, bring an event to the country and have fun doing it.”
