Controversy
Criticism for short film ‘My Choice’
In 2015, Homi Adajania was widely criticized for giving the wrong message in his short film ‘My Choice’. The film was based on women empowerment and talked about women’s freedom of choice. Critics considered the film to be ‘sexist or male-condemning’ for one of the dialogues in the film, which quotes,
To marry or not to marry is my choice… to have sex before marriage or to have sex outside marriage is my choice…”
Adajania later said that his film was misunderstood by audiences. He clarified in an interview that he had no intention of hurting people’s perceptions and notions. However, he also said that it became more viral due to misunderstandings and criticism about his film. Talking about this in an interview he said,
Ironically, it was because of the misunderstanding that #MyChoice went viral and if that’s what people need to discuss gender equality, then I’m willing to suffer the consequences and be misunderstood. More power to women and let’s hope a healthy discussion on gender equality continues.”

- Homi Adajania always wanted to be a commercial scuba diver, but since that job involved the risk of death, he decided to pursue a career in the film industry and joined an advertising kingpin after completing his college.
- His father ran a petrol pump in the red light area of Mumbai and after his death when he was 23, Homi Adjaina took over the business. He found it very difficult to run a petrol pump in an area where there were prostitutes, mafia and policemen all around. In an interview, he shared a terrible incident that happened to him while working there. He said,
This was extremely non-constructive and dangerous. I remember how once my manager was caught in front of me while taking cash to the bank and his fingers were cut off.
- In an interview, he revealed that it took him 10 years to get out of the state of fear that had developed in his mind while working in the red light area.
