Hemant Soren is an Indian politician from Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), and he is the Chief Minister of Jharkhand. He is the son of veteran politician Shibu Soren.

Hemant Soren was born on Sunday, 10 August 1975 (age 48 years; as in 2023) in Nemra, Ramgarh district, Bihar (now Jharkhand). His zodiac sign is Leo. He did his schooling from Patna High School in Patna, Bihar. After passing 12th class, he studied mechanical engineering from Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra in Ranchi, Jharkhand. However, he did not complete his college education.

Hemant Soren follows Hindu religion, and he belongs to Scheduled Tribe (ST). His father, Shibu Soren, is a well-known politician who has also served as a Union Cabinet Minister and Chief Minister of Jharkhand three times. His mother Rupi Soren is a farmer. He has 2 brothers, Durga Soren (elder; deceased) and Basant Soren (younger; businessman). His younger sister Anjali Soren is a politician.

Soren entered politics when he contested the Jharkhand Assembly elections in 2005, but he lost. On 24 June 2009, he was elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha. On January 4, 2010, when he was elected MLA from Dumka seat of Jharkhand, he resigned from Rajya Sabha. In 2009, he was appointed the working president of JMM. On 11 September 2010, he was appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister of Jharkhand, succeeding Arjun Munda as the Chief Minister. On 13 July 2013, he was appointed as the fifth and youngest Chief Minister of Jharkhand at the age of 38.

In the 2014 Jharkhand Assembly elections, BJP got majority in Jharkhand and Soren had to resign from the post of Chief Minister of Jharkhand. Soren contested and won the 2014 Jharkhand Assembly election from Barhet assembly constituency. On 8 January 2015, he was appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the Jharkhand Assembly. In January 2019, ahead of the 2019 Jharkhand assembly elections, Soren had met leaders of the Congress, Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik (JVM-P), and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and formed the first grand alliance (grand alliance).   • In 2017, Soren was invited by the then Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das to the “Jharkhand Global Investor Summit (GIS)”. However, Soren declined the invitation, and he said-

    This summit is a mega-contemplation camp of land grabbers and it is being organized to loot the land of tribals, indigenous people and farmers of the state.”

  • On 25 August 2022, in a recommendation to the Governor of Jharkhand, the Election Commission (EC) suggested that the Governor should disqualify Hemant Soren as an MLA under the Representation of the People Act, 1951. The recommendation was based on the stone mining allotment case in which Soren was found guilty of abusing his position and allotting himself a stone mining lease.
  • He was summoned by the Enforcement Directorate on November 2, 2022 for questioning by the agency in connection with the illegal mining case in the state.
  • In early 2024, Hemant Soren faced controversy due to an investigation led by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The ED, which is probing the Rs 600 crore land fraud case, found huge cash from his Delhi house on January 29. Soren, who had earlier escaped ED summons, later went missing leading to a search for him. During this period, additional security measures were taken in Ranchi. Soren, who was then found in Jharkhand, later denied the allegations and said they were politically motivated, and planned to challenge them in court.

    On January 31, 2024, after about seven hours of interrogation, ED arrested Hemant Soren. Soren became the third Jharkhand Chief Minister to be arrested after his father Shibu Soren and Madhu Koda.

Hemant was pushed into JMM leadership due to the sudden demise of his brother. Earlier Durga Soren was said to be the political successor of Shibu Soren.
