Hekani Jakhalu is an Indian lawyer, social worker and politician who contested the 2023 Nagaland Legislative Assembly election. She made headlines in 2023 when she became the first woman to be elected as a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Nagaland along with Salhautuonuo Kruse.

Hekani Jakhalu Kense was born in 1975 (age 48 years; as of 2023) in Toluvi, Dimapur, Nagaland. She studied at Holy Cross Higher Secondary School in Dimapur after which she attended Bishop Cotton Girls School in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Later, she attended Lady Shri Ram College for Women in New Delhi, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. In 2002, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies from American University. In 2008, he enrolled at Harvard University in the United States, where he pursued executive education. Later, he earned a bachelor’s degree in law from Delhi University. He then obtained a degree in executive education from American University. Later, he attended the University of San Francisco, where he earned a master’s degree in law. Later, she worked as an intern with the United Nations (UN) Committee on the Status of Women.

After completing his formal education, he started practicing law in New Delhi. Later, he co-founded a law firm in Delhi, which provided consultancy to its clients in the field of civil and corporate law. However, he resigned from the firm in 2005. As an advocate, he represented his clients in the Delhi High Court as well as the Supreme Court. He practiced law in the Delhi High Court until 2005.
Politician
After leaving law practice in New Delhi and transferring back to Nagaland, Hekani Jakhalu joined the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP). He contested the 2023 Nagaland Assembly election from Dimapur III constituency on NDPP ticket.
In the elections, she defeated Lok Janshakti (Ram Vilas) candidate Azeto Zimomi by 1536 votes, and became the first woman to enter the state assembly in Nagaland. While giving an interview he said,
I won because people wanted change. I have been in social service for more than 17 years. I have always worked with youth. I will work for minority communities (non-tribal communities). They make up more than half the population in the constituency.
In 2002, Hekani began working with Amnesty International in San Francisco. He worked there until 2003. In 2006, Hekani Jakhalu left law practice in New Delhi and moved to Dimapur, where he founded YouthNet, a non-profit organization. Subsequently, the NGO established many job centers in Nagaland to provide employment to the people of North-East based on their educational qualification. The NGO has tied up with global organizations such as JW Marriott Hotels and Pullman Hotels & Resorts. Later, NGOs started providing vocational courses to the youth at very low fees. While giving an interview he said,
We give them orientation for a week, and explain to them about the sector. Apart from this, we keep in touch with them, especially with first-time visitors. We have a mechanism by which we track them and take care of the safety and accommodation of the youth for a year.”
In September 2008, she became the President of Young Indians and held the post till September 2010. In 2013, with the intention of promoting young entrepreneurs, YouthNet launched a program called “The Entrepreneur”, in which a number of budding professionals represent their ideas.
Giving an interview, Hekani Jakhalu said that he decided to start his NGO in Nagaland when he saw a large number of youth from the northeastern parts of India working away from their hometown in New Delhi. Talking about this he said,
At every shop in every mall, you can see young boys and girls from the North East working there. I wondered who was driving the youth from the North-East to the metros. Was it by choice, or by compulsion? “Also, because most came from small villages, these cities were not safe, were expensive to live in, and were culturally diverse.”
In 2018, to promote local products of Nagaland, Youthnet established Made in Nagaland, a hub where manufacturers sell their products to consumers.
