Heather Brooke Armstrong, the writer known as “Dooce,” has passed away.
The social media star, who gained notoriety in the early days of blogging, died on Tuesday (May 9) at the age of 47, her family confirmed on social media a day later.
Her boyfriend, Pete Ashdown, told the Associated Press she died by suicide.
“She had a relapse recently and that’s what really spiraled her down. She was sober for over 18 months, then she sobered up again. And then, in the last month, she went into overdrive,” she explained.
Heather chronicled her struggles with severe depression and alcoholism.
“Early sobriety is akin to living life like a clam without its shell,” he wrote in one of his final posts.
“Heather Brooke Hamilton aka Heather B. Armstrong aka Dooce aka the love of my life. July 19, 1975 – May 9, 2023. ‘It takes an ocean not to break.’ Keep your loved ones close and love everyone else, ”her boyfriend wrote next to the publication announcing her death.
At one point, dooce.com reportedly reached over 8 million viewers a month and earned him over $100,000 a year from ad sales. would later appear in The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2009 and was named one of the most influential women in media by Forbes that same year.
He wrote three books: The valedictorian of death, Dear daughter and I sucked and then I cried.
