Harsh Mahajan was born on Monday, 12 December 1955 (age 67 years; as in 2022) in Chamba, Himachal Pradesh. He earned a bachelor’s degree in commerce from Shri Ram College of Commerce, New Delhi and a master’s degree in business administration from Delhi University, New Delhi.

livelihood
Harsh started his political career in 1972 when he joined the Indian National Congress. He was a three-time former MLA from Chamba in 1993, 1998 and 2003. In 1989, he was appointed as the President of Himachal Pradesh Youth Congress (1986–1995). In 1993 he became Parliamentary Secretary of Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly. In 1998, he was again appointed as Parliamentary Secretary to the State Legislative Assembly. In 2003, he served as Cabinet Minister for Animal Husbandry. He left electoral politics in 2007. From 2013 to 2018 he served as the Chairman of Himachal Pradesh Cooperative Department. He has served as the Vice President and General Secretary of Himachal Pradesh Congress for thirty-five years from 1987 to 2022. He has also served as the Chairman of the State Cooperative Bank from 2013-2017. Under his chairmanship the bank received three national awards. In 2022, he left the Indian National Congress. On 28 September 2022, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.

- In 2022, Harsh left the Congress party and joined the BJP in the presence of Union Minister Piyush Goyal and party general secretary Vinod Tawde in New Delhi. Explaining the reason for leaving the party, he said,
I have been in Congress for almost 45 years. I did not lose any election. As long as Virbhadra Singh was there, Congress was there. Today Congress has become directionless. There is no vision and no leadership. After the death of Virbhadra Singh, there is nothing left for Congress in the state. Congress will not win in Himachal and BJP will win again. PM Modi is the only leader who will take the country forward.
- In an interview, while talking about HPCC chief Pratibha Singh and her MLA son Vikramaditya Singh, he alleged nepotism in the Congress party and said that the Congress has become “visionless, directionless and leaderless” and like Delhi, it is a “mother -Governed by “son”.
