Harry Belafonte sadly passed away.
The legendary singer, best known for hits such as “Banana Boat,” “Island in the Sun,” “Jump in the Line,” “Shake, Shake Senora” and “Jamaica Farewell,” died Tuesday (April 25) in a at the age of 96 at his home on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, his publicist confirmed to the New York Post.

In addition to being a successful singer and an iconic figure within the folk music scene, Harry was also a civil rights activist. He was a friend of Martin Luther King, Jr. and won many awards for his work, including the Nelson Mandela Award for Courage.
She became the first black person to win an Emmy in 1960, and also won several Grammy Awards and starred in Broadway productions such as Three for tonight. He also received the National Medal of Arts.
