On 4 July 2022, he assumed the position of Cabinet Minister for School Education in the Government of Punjab.

At the age of 23, Harjot was the founding president of the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab. During the 2013 Delhi Assembly elections, Harjot Singh informally led a small team, which was given the responsibility of managing Hari Nagar and Tilak Nagar areas, which the party later won. After emerging as the largest party in Delhi and forming its government in 2013, the party started establishing its roots in Punjab. In May–June 2013, Harjot Singh Bains was made the convener of the Aam Aadmi Party for the state of Punjab. After the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Bains was made the head of the youth wing of the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab. Talking about this in an interview, Harjot Singh said,

I am happy that I have been given the specific task of garnering the support of the youth, which has proved important for our party.

In 2017, Harjot Singh Bains contested the Legislative Assembly election from Sahnewal constituency on an Aam Aadmi Party ticket. Bains lost the election by securing 39,000 votes. The election was won by Sharanjit Singh Dhillon of Shiromani Akali Dal. Soon, he became the spokesperson of the Aam Aadmi Party and a member of the AAP’s national executive.

He won the election by defeating Kanwarpal Singh Rana of the Indian National Congress by a margin of 45,780 votes. After the Aam Aadmi Party came to power in Punjab in 2022, Bains was inducted into the cabinet in the Mann Ministry. He took oath as Cabinet Minister on 19 March 2023 at the Guru Nanak Dev Auditorium of Punjab Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh.

He was given charge of four departments, namely –

Taking over the prison ministry in May 2022, Harjot Singh announced that prison superintendents would be held responsible for illegal use of mobile phones by prisoners inside the prison premises. A month later, Bains announced that since the AAP government came to power in Punjab, around 1000 mobile phones had been seized from Punjab jails. Harjot also claimed that the government is making continuous efforts to modernize the prisons and around 1000 prison wardens are being recruited to fill the vacant posts. He also worked towards converting prisons into genuine ‘Sudhar Ghar’ (reformation facilities).

Bains also claimed that during her tenure as prison minister, some high-profile prisoners were not provided any luxurious facilities like previous governments. Leading the Mines Ministry, Harjot Singh Bains introduced strict regulations for mining. Many rules were made to influence the sand mafia in Punjab region. After holding the post for about three and a half months, Bains was stripped of both portfolios in a cabinet reshuffle and given the ministry of higher education and school education.

In February 2023, Harjot Singh organized a one-day orientation workshop for secondary education officers at the Punjab School Education Board auditorium to discuss ways to increase enrollment in government schools during the new academic session. Show cause notices were issued to the officers who were absent from the workshop.
