Hari Sahni contested the 2015 Bihar Legislative Assembly election from Bahadurpur on a BJP ticket but lost. He was the district president and district in-charge of BJP’s Darbhanga. Hari Sahni is a leader coming from Economically Backward Class (EBC). In 2020, he was named as the candidate from Keoti in Darbhanga, but he withdrew from the election after the party put forward Murari Mohan Jha, a Brahmin candidate, to maintain balanced representation in the region. The party later emerged victorious in the Keoti constituency and appointed Hari Sahni as the Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) for Bihar in 2022. Hari Sawhney also participated in the 2022 Kurhani by-election campaign. In August 2023, he replaced Samrat Chaudhary as the Leader of the Opposition (LOP) of the Bihar Legislative Council.
