Hank Azaria pays tribute to his old friend Matthew Perry.

On Saturday (October 28), the Friends The star tragically died apparently drowning at his Los Angeles home. She was 54 years old.

The day after Matthew’s passing, Hank, 59, shared a video message honoring Matthew, who he said was “the funniest man who ever lived.”

“Matthew was the first friend I made in Los Angeles when I moved there. I was 21 and he was 16,” Hank shared on Instagram. “Matthew and I became very good friends and were more like brothers for a long time. “We drank a lot together, we laughed a lot together, we were there for each other in the early days of our career.”

“I really loved him. Many of us who were close to him feel like we lost him to drugs and alcohol a long time ago because, as documented in his autobiography, there was a lot of suffering,” Hank continued, adding of Matthew’s 2022 memoir : Friends, lovers and the great terrible thing“I had to pick up and put down that biography, like 11 times, it was very painful for me to read it.”

Hank, who is a recovering alcoholic, also reflected on how Matthew’s struggle with addiction affected their friendship.

“I’ve been a sober guy for 17 years, and I want to say that the night I went to AA, Matthew brought me along. The whole first year I was sober, we went to meetings together,” Hank recalled. “He was very loving, generous and wise. And he totally helped me get sober. And I really wish that he could have, you know, found in himself the ability to stay with the silver life more consistently.”

He continued: “But it is heartbreaking for those of us who loved him and knew him very well, personally. We just miss him. We just miss him. “One of the terrible things about this disease is that it simply takes away the person you love.”

Hank then praised Matthew’s comedic skills.

“I just lived to laugh and every night I did it; he was like a genius. He would knit, he would start weaving comedy threads, he would just hang out,” Hank said. “A joke here, a joke there. A joke here, a joke there. And then at the end of the night, he would weave them all into this crescendo of hilarity. Most of the nights you spent with Matthew you ended up crying with laughter.”

He concluded: “As an actor, he was very brilliant. He just wishes that we – the world – me and the world – could have gotten what the rest of his career would have been like.”

In addition to being very good friends, Hank and Matthew shared the screen in Friends with Hank playing David, a love interest of Lisa Kudrow’s character Phoebe.

In his memoirs, Matthew wrote about how he wants to be remembered after his death.
