Joey King Once Talked About Playing Gypsy Rose Blanchard in ‘The Act’

During a 2019 interview with Variety, Joey King spoke about her approach to playing Gypsy Rose Blanchard in The act.

“The physical transformation was really huge for me,” King said. “I shaved my head, I wore four different sets of false teeth for the role, and with the costumes, the wheelchair, and the voice, it all seemed to really fit for me.”

King later reflected on the abuse Gypsy Rose Blanchard suffered while in Dee Dee’s care. “In the first few episodes I really think Gypsy believed her mother and wanted to listen to her,” King said. “Because she didn’t know anything else; her life had always been about trusting Dee Dee, listening to Dee Dee.”

King added that after that it stopped being a performance in front of Dee Dee. “And as the series goes on you’ll see a much bigger difference,” he noted. “In the way I act when Dee Dee is there.”
