Gypsy Rose Blanchard recently gave her first revealing interview since being released from prison.
The 32-year-old man sat with Good morning america Deborah Roberts earlier this week to detail her experiences with child abuse that led her to commit second-degree murder and share information about her time in prison.
Blanchard spent more than eight years inside Missouri’s Chillicothe Correctional Facility after convincing her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, to kill her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. Dee Dee supposedly suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy. The disorder causes parents to pretend that their children are sick to gain their sympathy.
During Blanchard’s formative years, he was led to believe he had cancer, muscular dystrophy, severe allergies, and more. Dee Dee did everything she could to create false symptoms in her daughter. As a result, Blanchard underwent multiple unnecessary surgeries and took dozens of unnecessary medications that forced her to be in a wheelchair and on feeding tubes.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard was sentenced to ten years in prison, but only met the state minimum of 85%, which translated to more than eight years. She was released on December 28, 2023.
“I felt a little bit like I was dropped into a different world,” she told Roberts during the interview that aired Jan. 5. “You don’t realize how much you are restricted in prison. I felt like I was in a black and white world and I just stepped into technicolor. It was incredible.”
Blanchard said prison was not “much different” from life with his mother, and that he had “more freedom” behind bars. He also admitted that her mother was not a “monster.” However, she forgives herself for her crime.
“She had a lot of demons that she was struggling with,” Blanchard shared. “I didn’t want her dead. She just wanted out of my situation. And I thought that was the only way out.”

Considering the complicated circumstances surrounding the crime, people have mixed feelings about Gypsy Rose Blanchard, especially since she has become a celebrity over the years.
Blanchard has gained a cult following that includes millions of followers who believe her abuse justified the crime. Many people wish her luck while she”reintegrates into society.” Others feel uneasy about the fact that she convinced another person to do her bidding.

Godejon is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole after stabbing Dee Dee to death inside her home.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard told Roberts that she is “sure we both have a lot of regrets.”
“The only thing I can say is that I served my sentence,” he added. “He is serving his sentence for his part. And I wish him the best on his journey.”
Despite well wishes, many do not believe Blanchard feels any remorse for Godejon, who reportedly suffers from autism. They also do not believe that the murder was justified because she had “other options.”

“There is no doubt that her mother was abusive,” another person wrote. “…But many of those who have suffered the worst abuse do not murder their parents.”
Gypsy Rose Blanchard will further explain her life in a six-part documentary series titled The prison confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchardwhich premieres tonight (January 5) on Lifetime.
