Gujarat Day 2023: May 1st is celebrated as International Labor Day or May Day and is also an important day in Gujarat and Maharashtra. Both states were created on this day in 1960 under the Bombay Reorganization Act. It represents the heritage and cultural identity of Gujrati. Gujarat: History
It is believed that Lord Krishna left Mathura and settled on the west coast of Saurashtra, which was later called Dwarka, the gateway. The state then saw various kingdoms including Mauryas, Guptas, Pratiharas and others. Gujarat saw progress and prosperity during the rule of Chalukya or Solanki. Gujarat also faced difficult times under Muslim, Maratha and British rule. Prior to independence, the present Gujarat territory was used in two parts as British territory and princely territory. With the reorganization of the states, the Federation of Saurashtra and the Union Territory of Kachchh along with the former British, Gujarat became part of Bombay’s largest bilingual state. State Reorganization Act, 1956
Most of the states were reorganized linguistically under the State Reorganization Act of 1956. This act also merged the Gujarati and Marathi speaking areas together leading to unrest in both these areas. . A local political movement known as the Mahagujarat movement demanded a separate state for the Gujarati speakers of the bilingual state of Bombay in India. And in the end, the movement was successful and the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra were established.
New Bombay State was created on 1st November 1956 by enactment of State Reorganization Act 1956, which includes Marathi speaking areas of former Bombay state, Vidarbha region of former Madhya Pradesh state, Marathwada region of the former state of Bombay. the former state of Hyderabad, and the former states of Saurashtra and Kutch. Then, on 1 May 1960, with the enactment of Bombay Reorganization Act, 1960, the former states of Kutch and Saurashtra were separated from Bombay State into the new state of Gujarat, and Bombay State was renamed Maharashtra.
