Gujarat also faced difficult times under Muslim, Maratha and British rule. Prior to independence, the present Gujarat territory was used in two parts as British territory and princely territory. With the reorganization of the states, the Federation of Saurashtra and the Union Territory of Kachchh along with the former British, Gujarat became part of Bombay’s largest bilingual state. The present state of Gujarat was established on May 1, 1960. The state is located on the west coast of India.
