Gufran (1996–2023) was an Indian history-sheeter who was involved in various criminal activities such as dacoity, murder, extortion and robbery. He was a gang leader and carried out criminal activities in different parts of Uttar Pradesh. On June 27, 2023, he was killed in an encounter by the Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh.

In 2023, Gufran was named in 13 criminal cases, including seven cases of murder, attempt to murder and robbery. Gufran along with his gang carried out criminal activities for years in Pratapgarh and Sultanpur districts of Uttar Pradesh. Some members of his gang are in jail. It was also suspected that he might have links with the IS-227 Ateeq gang. On April 24, 2023, Gufran shot and looted Saresham Jeweler in Pratapgarh. Some of his other criminal cases are:
case of robbery and murder
On May 15, 2023, a young man named Tanveer was murdered near the cemetery in Mahuar village under Kotwali Nagar police station area. Pratapgarh Superintendent of Police Satpal Antil formed teams to arrest those responsible for the incident. Eventually, the police arrested four people involved in Gufran’s gang, while Gufran himself managed to escape due to geographical conditions. The police recovered a total of Rs 150,000, which were linked to various robbery cases, along with two mobile phones of the gang members, three mobile phones of the accused, an illegal .32 caliber pistol with two live bullets. One illegal .315 caliber pistol, one live bullet and another .315 caliber pistol.
Gufran gang members have been arrested by Uttar Pradesh Police
During interrogation, the arrested persons admitted that they were members of the gang led by Gufran, who had managed to escape. He confessed to indulging in crimes like theft and robbery by using the money he received to meet his daily expenses. Before his arrest, he had also planned to rob a petrol pump. When he was asked about the money and firearms recovered from him, he told that Gufran, along with some other gang members, had shot Tanveer dead. The motive behind the murder was that the would-be wife of the deceased was a close friend of one of the accused and the accused was unhappy with the news of their upcoming marriage.
Lalta Sharma murder case
On 1 September 2023, Gufran and his gang members committed a murder. He killed a person named Tantrik Lalta Prasad. Local police said that a man named Anil Kumar Mishra from Balipur had allegedly hired contract killers to get rid of Lalta Sharma. Mishra was tired of Sharma constantly asking for more money. Earlier, Mishra had asked Sharma to help in the treatment of his wife, who was unwell for some years. Mishra claimed that he had already paid enough money to Lalta’s exorcists, but despite his wife’s condition not improving, the exorcists kept demanding more money. Mishra also alleged that Ojha had evil intentions against his wife and used to come to their house uninvited. During police interrogation, Mishra confessed to conspiring to eliminate Ojha. He contacted a contract killer named Shehzad Alam, also known as Bhaiya. Alam demanded Rs 2.5 lakh for the murder and Mishra gave him an advance of Rs 50,000. Police revealed that Alam and his four associates had originally planned to kill Sharma on Rakshabandhan, but changed their mind when they saw many visitors to his house. Later Gufran went to Sharma’s house saying that he needed treatment for his ailing brother. However, Lalta Sharma refused to go with him saying that she had to go to Mumbai for work. On September 1, 2023, the four hired killers returned to Sharma’s house. Gufran convinced Sharma to accompany him on his motorcycle on the pretext of further treatment. Ultimately Gufran shot Sharma near the canal, killing him. In June 2023, a reward of Rs 50,000 was announced for information leading to Gufran’s arrest, which was later increased to Rs 100,000 on 24 June 2023. Local police reported a robbery that took place in Pratapgarh on 24 April 2023. During the incident, Gufran was captured in CCTV footage looting the shop. As a result, Prayagraj Police offered a reward of Rs 100,000 for information leading to Gufran’s arrest, while Sultanpur Police offered a reward of Rs 25,000.
Death
On June 27, 2023, Uttar Pradesh Police encountered Gufran in Kokhraj, a village in Sirathu block of Kaushambi district of Uttar Pradesh. The encounter took place around 5:00 am during an operation conducted by the Special Task Force (STF). According to STF Additional Director General Amitabh Yash, Gufran was injured by the bullet during the encounter and retaliatory firing. The STF team had surrounded the Samada sugar mill when Gufran started firing. There was firing between the two sides for about 20 minutes. During the conversation, Gufran got shot in the jaw and fell down. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead at around 6 am. Under the operation, the STF team recovered a 9mm carbine and a .32 bore pistol from Gufran’s possession. Addressing the media, the local police said,
We were trying to trace him (Gangster Gufran) for some time. When we reached Kaushambi to arrest him, he opened fire, to which we retaliated. He was shot in the firing and was later taken to the hospital, where he died.
STF CO DK Shahi said that he received information that Gufran was present near the toll plaza in Kokhraj area. At 4:40 in the morning, the STF team surrounded the Kokhraj area and started the operation. Seeing the presence of police, Gufran tried to escape towards Manjhanpur on his Apache motorcycle. STF chased him.
