In 1994, Gregg Berhalter left UNC after his junior year and signed with Dutch club Zwolle. In Holland, he later played for Sparta Rotterdam and SC Cambuur Leeuwarden. He also played for Crystal Palace in England, where he briefly played alongside Jovan Kirovski. Likewise, during his stay at Crystal Palace, he scored a goal against Bradford City.

Gregg Berhalter signed with Energie Cottbus of the German Bundesliga in 2002. He made 111 league appearances with the team. He also captained the team to a successful promotion to the Bundesliga. He subsequently signed for TSV 1860 München of the 2. Bundesliga, in 2006. For 2 and a half years he remained there, playing 73 league games for Die Löwen.
He returned to the United States in April 2009 after a 15-year career in Europe. Likewise, he signed a contract with Major League Soccer. On April 3, 2009, he was revealed as a player for the Los Angeles Galaxy. His goals against him were cut in half: from 61 to 30, in his first season with the Galaxy. He was named head coach of Swedish club Hammarby IF on December 12, 2011. And he is the first American to manage a professional soccer team in Europe. For lack of attacking play, he was fired on July 24, 2013. On November 16, 2013, he became sporting director and head coach of Columbus Crew.
