Gitanjali Aiyar’s career
In 1971, Gitanjali Aiyar joined Doordarshan and became one of the first female English news broadcasters. For over 30 years, she’s covered the news on the national channel, winning four awards for best presenter. She has been the host of popular shows like Khandaan and A Date With You. She is known for her presentation style and warm, smooth voice.
In addition, Gitanjali Aiyar has been a journalist, presenter and a businesswoman. She served as the head of major donors for the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Additionally, she has worked as a consultant in marketing, government relations and corporate communications, as well as for the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

Gitanjali Aiyar is dead
Gitanjali Aiyar passed away at her home in Delhi on June 7, 2023. She took medicine for Parkinson’s disease for several years. Her family, friends, colleagues and fans were shocked to hear of her passing.
Several celebrities have shared their grief and condolences on social media. The interim president of the Mahila Congress, Netta D’Souza, tweeted:
“We miss the days when Gitanjali Aiyar ji appeared on our TV screens, leaving an indelible mark on our news viewing experience. Grieving over her untimely death, I offer my sincere condolences to her loved ones. May he find eternal peace.”
Senior journalist Sheela Bhatt tweeted:
“Gitanjali Aiyar, one of India’s best TV newsreaders, a warm, elegant person and a woman of great value passed away today. My deepest condolences to her family.”
A son and two daughters are living members of the Gitanjali Aiyar family. On June 8, 2023, her funeral was held in Delhi for cremation at Lodhi Road.
