Giriraj Singh is an Indian politician from Bihar. He served as the Union Minister of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries in the Narendra Modi government.

Giriraj Singh was born on 8 September 1952 (age 66 years; as in 2018) in Barhiya, Lakhisarai district of Bihar. His zodiac sign is Virgo. He did his schooling from a government school in Barhiya village, Bihar. He completed his Bachelor of Arts from Magadh University, Bodhgaya, Bihar in 1971. Before joining politics, he was a social worker. He joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and worked with them as a volunteer. He has always been interested in farming and cattle rearing and keeps taking steps to ensure better living conditions for animals. He has also presented a research paper on animal feed based on morning biomass with the help of scientists from Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh.

Giriraj Singh belongs to Bhumihar Brahmin family. He was born to Ramavatar Singh and Tara Devi. He has a brother, Jairaj Singh. There is not much information about his family. He is married to Uma Sinha (retired teacher). He also has a daughter.

political career

Giriraj Singh was elected as MLC to Bihar Legislative Council in the year 2002. In the year 2005, he was appointed as the Cooperation Minister of Bihar in the Nitish Kumar government. In 2010, Singh was appointed as the Minister of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Resources Development of Bihar. In June 2013, he was dropped from the post of Animal Husbandry Minister as Janata Dal-United (JDU) broke its alliance with the BJP. After the break of the alliance, 11 BJP members were removed from ministerial posts.

In 2013, the BJP announced his name as its candidate for the 2014 Lok Sabha election from Nawada constituency of Bihar. Giriraj Singh was not happy with the announcement of his name from Nawada; Because he wanted to contest elections from Begusarai. He won the election and was elected MP from Nawada, Bihar. On 4 September 2017, he was appointed as the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

In 2018, BJP announced the name of Giriraj Singh as its Lok Sabha candidate from Begusarai constituency of Bihar. He was ready to contest elections against Kanhaiya Kumar. Giriraj won the election by a margin of 4.20 lakh votes. He was elected to the 17th Lok Sabha and was also inducted as a cabinet minister in the Narendra Modi government.

controversies

  • While campaigning before the 2014 general elections, Singh had said in a rally that those who oppose Narendra Modi should be sent to Pakistan as they do not belong to India. On behalf of BJP, he was asked to refrain from making such statements in future.
  • Giriraj lodged a police complaint of theft at his house on 8 July 2014. They reported theft of cash, jewelery and other property worth Rs. 50,000. Police caught the thief and recovered jewelery, cash and other luxury items worth Rs. 1.14 crores. This raised many questions because according to the affidavit given to the Election Commission, he has declared cash and jewelery worth Rs 1.14 lakh. Many leaders in Bihar Assembly expressed concern over this and demanded investigation and suspension of Giriraj Singh.
  • He created a major controversy on 30 March 2015 when a video of him in a closed environment with his friends surfaced online. He had to face a lot of criticism for his statement. He was accused of being racist and sexist. After the matter escalated, Giriraj Singh had to apologize in Parliament. Congress demanded his resignation and apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.   • In April 2016, he had said that population control is a big issue and steps should be taken in this direction. He said that to curb population, people of all religions should produce equal number of children. In October 2016, he said that the Muslim population in India was increasing rapidly and to deal with this problem, Hindus should produce more children. He said that the rapidly increasing Muslim population is a threat to India and it has to be dealt with.
  • On June 4, 2019, Nitish Kumar had organized an Iftar party in a mosque. Regarding the Iftar party, Giriraj Singh tweeted and said-

He reportedly went to Rajnath Singh’s house crying and requested him to change his ticket from Nawada constituency in Bihar to Begusarai in Bihar.
