Gina Carano sues Disney for discrimination in lawsuit funded by Elon Musk

Almost three years after Disney fired her The Mandalorian, Gina Carano goes head-to-head with the House of Mouse in a new lawsuit funded by Elon Musk.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Carano is suing both Disney and Lucasfilm over the firing. The actress claims that she was fired from Star Wars Series to express right-wing opinions on social networks. It is also seeking a court order forcing Lucasfilm to recast it.

How does Elon Musk fit into this? The owner of X previously promised to pay legal fees to users of the platform who have been discriminated against due to their social media activities.

Joe Benarroch, head of business operations at X, issued a statement regarding Gina Carano’s lawsuit. “As a sign of X Corp’s commitment to freedom of expression, we are proud to provide financial support to Gina Carano’s lawsuit,” he said. “Give you power to seek vindication of your rights to freedom of expression in X and the ability to work without intimidation, harassment or discrimination.”

In 2021, Lucasfilm announced Gina Carano’s departure from The Mandalorian after she made a post on X implying that being a Republican is like being Jewish during the Holocaust. She previously posted other posts about her ring-wing pose that were considered “hot” topics.

Among the incidents, Carano mocked government mandates to wear masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also falsely suggested voter fraud during the 2020 presidential election.

Gina Carano’s lawsuit also claims that Disney and Lucasfilm harassed and defamed her for refusing to “conform” to their views on certain issues. These include Black Lives Matter, preferred pronouns, and debunked claims of election interference.

Gina Carano claimed that Disney and LucasFilm turned a blind eye to her male co-stars who also made offensive posts. She used as an example Pedro Pascal’s 2017 post comparing former President Donald Trump to Hitler.

Carano then revealed that Disney asked her to meet with a representative of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination. Disney also demanded that she publicly apologize for her comments.

“Defendants went so far as to try to convince Carano’s publicist to force Carano to issue a statement,” the lawsuit reads. “Admitting to making fun of or insulting an entire group of people, something Carano had never done.”

After rejecting Disney’s request, he was told to meet with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. He was also asked to meet with 45 employees who identify as LGBTQ. She testified and was fired shortly after. Not only was she expelled from The Mandalorian, she was fired Ranger of the New Republic.

Gina Carano’s lawsuit claims wrongful termination and sexual discrimination. In addition to the court order for Lucasfilm to recast it, she also wants at least $75,000, plus punitive damages.

“Some of us have been unfairly targeted, harassed, persecuted and stripped of our livelihoods,” Carano said. “Because we dared to encourage conversation, asked questions, and refused to agree with the mob.”

Carano also spoke about X financing her lawsuit. “I am honored that my case was chosen to receive support from the company that has been one of the last rays of hope for freedom of expression in the world.”
