Obituary of wrestling referee Gerrard Flores: Gerrard Flores, a well-known referee in the Colorado wrestling community, died on January 7th. Flores enjoyed being a turnip digger and officiated countless matches during his long tenure as a referee. He played various sports, including baseball, in addition to wrestling.
A guy who impacted so many people’s lives, countless parents took to Facebook to pay their respects to Gerrard and his impact on the wrestling community. Gerrard’s two children and two sisters also posted pictures with their father. Gerrard Flores was a true legend of the Colorado wrestling scene.
Obituary and cause of death of wrestling official Gerrard Flores
Gerrard Flores died at noon on Jan. 7 while competing in a wrestling match at Arvada West High School. Flores had medical problems during the game, and firefighters and police arrived. According to police public information officer Dave Snelling, efforts to revive Flores were futile. Flores was taken to an ambulance but died en route and was pronounced dead at the scene.
“One of the judges at the wrestling tournament got sick,” Snelling said. Arvada firefighters and police arrived and he was treated. He died despite all resuscitation efforts.”
After Flores’ death, the wrestling event was canceled. Flores was a popular figure on the Colorado wrestling scene. He was a former varsity wrestler who earned a degree in business administration from Northeastern Jr. College. In 1988, Flores worked as a supervisor for Time Warner Cable in addition to being a wrestling referee.
As a tribute to Flores, Colorado Wrestling’s Facebook page posted a link to a 9News story about him. Flores not only hosted wrestling events, but other sports as well. Flores posted more photos of the Denver Broncos on Facebook. He would occasionally provide schedules of neighboring wrestling events on his social media accounts.
Tribute to the judge from Colorado
Gerrard Flores, originally from Colorado, has two boys, Treo and Tristin Flores. His two sons did not comment, but posted nostalgic photos with their father. Tera Flores, the singer, posted on Twitter a childhood picture of her sitting on her father’s lap. He added a broken heart emoticon to the post’s description. Tristin Gerrard, Gerrard’s youngest son, posted a photo of himself with his father at Fenway Park.
There are videos of Gerrard umpiring at children’s baseball games. Malessa Hernandez, his sister, posted a video of her brother umpiring numerous baseball games. Malessa re-shared the video on her Facebook profile after the parent of one of the children posted it on her account. Mindy L. Albert, the person who uploaded the video, said, “You’ve touched so many of these kids’ lives through sports and you’ve given the kids a chance to shine.”
Chaparral wrestling club also paid tribute to the great judge. The wrestling club posted photos of Gerrard during wrestling tournaments with the caption: “If you’ve spent any amount of time around youth wrestling over the years, you’ve known Gerrard.”
“The wrestling community has lost a wonderful person!” they continued. He contributed so much to the sport and to our children.”
