Gautam joined the Singhania family’s JK Group company in 1986. He then joined the family’s Raymond Group and became a director in 1990. He was appointed group managing director in July 1999 and chairman in September 2000. Gautam Singhania inherited his father Vijaypat Singhania’s entire 37.17% stake in Raymond in 2015, leading to a family feud. On 13 February 2015, Vijaypat signed his resignation letter and sent it to Gautam. In his autobiography, ‘An Incomplete Life: The Autobiography’, Vijaypat revealed that he had once discussed handing over Raymond’s inheritance to Gautam with friends in London, who advised against it. Despite concerns, Vijaypat was confident that Gautam would not misbehave with him. According to Vijaypat, he was expected to get an apartment in his ancestral building, JK House, on Altamount Road, Mumbai, as per the 2007 family agreement. However, he was surprised to learn that Gautam had asked the board members not to allot him an apartment in JK House in his absence. According to Gautam, the allotment was stopped due to changes in the Company Law in 2013. When news of the feud emerged, Vijaypat accused Gautam of stealing priceless documents and a gold medal from his cabin at Mahindra Tower in Worli.
