Federica Lombardi News

The realm of classical music has become increasingly global during the last generation. Performers traverse the world with gruelling frequency, and it has taken the pandemic’s travel limitations to highlight how unsustainable that paradigm has grown.

In Europe’s opera houses, there has been a cycle of last-minute cast changes over the previous few months. Although it has experienced its fair share of these, the Royal Opera in London must be thrilled that its revival of Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro has endured with the loss of just one principal singer.

An extra effort was made to book a cast that was virtually exclusively Italian. With the exception of an English Susanna and an Irish Basilio, all of the Italian singers at the opera’s 1786 Vienna premiere are known for their zesty, Italianate cut-and-thrust of the comic libretto.

Overall, this revival was excellent. Every facet of David McVicar’s attractive production has been updated to fit its new ensemble, including the joke about Susanna needing to stand on a box when she is portraying a much taller Countess. Although McVicar’s Figaro this time around is more of a comic than it was previously, revolutionary fire still simmers beneath the surface.

Federica Lombardi, a young soprano, leads the group as an elegantly sung Countess who exhibits flawless musicianship in both of her arias. Davide Luciano has been replaced, and Germán E Alcántara now plays the predatory, potentially aggressive, and borderline caricature Count. Giulia Semenzato and Riccardo Fassi, who plays Figaro and is a talented comedy actor, are lovable as Susanna and Figaro, respectively.

Hanna Hipp, one of the few non-Italians, portrays Cherubino in a delightfully goofy way. The musical performance was excellent thanks to music director Antonio Pappano, who drew drama and character from each word. Who could resist Lombardi and Semenzato’s exquisite singing in the Letter Duet? The return of live opera is such a thrill.

Lise Davidsen will be relieved to arrive in London knowing that her brief European tour went almost exactly as planned. The Barbican’s Artist Spotlight this season is on Norwegian soprano Davidsen, who won the Operalia competition in 2015 and shocked the world with her performance. Her brief series of performances and seminars began with this recital alongside fellow countryman pianist Leif Ove Andsnes.

Grieg from their most recent album made up the entirety of the opening half. The performances did a good job of capturing the native rhythms of Haugtussa, Grieg’s sole song cycle, despite Davidsen’s majestic soprano gloating in far more volume than the song repertoire requires, helped by Andsnes’s as-clear-as-Arctic-water accompaniments.
