M. Fathima Beevi, daughter of Khadeeja Beevi and Annaveettil Meer Sahib, was born on April 30, 1927 in a turbulent family in Pathanamthitta, Kingdom of Travancore, now part of Kerala, India. She earned a degree in chemistry from University College, Thiruvananthapuram after attending Pathanamthitta City School and Catholic High School. Fathima Beevi completed her graduation from the Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram. She was appointed as the Governor of Tamil Nadu on 25 January 1997. Shankar Dayal Sharma, the then President of India, appointed her as the Governor of Tamil Nadu and Justice Sukhdev Singh Kang, former Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir, as the Governor of Kerala, stating that “their experience and insight into the functioning of the Constitution and laws are valuable assets.”
She rejected the pleas of the four convicts for sympathy in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case in her role as the state’s governor. The prisoners’ sympathy petitions to the Governor demanded that she exercise her powers under Article 161 of the Constitution.
