A Twitter user has posted a horrifying reinterpretation of the beloved jelly bean player characters from Fall Guys. The fanart comes following the revelation that the characters stand 1.83 meters tall, quite a bit taller than the average human being.
Fall Guys is an absolute sensation online. Days after its release, it had already broken some wildly impressive sales milestones and generated a player base large enough to crash servers regularly. The game’s universal appeal has attracted the eye of several brands, which are now vying desperately for representation in the game. It’s easy to see why; Fall Guys is a cultural phenomenon, but unlike similar battle royale games, it’s a relatively nonviolent one. In fact, it owes much of its appeal to how child-friendly it appears. The bright and colorful obstacle courses are a delight to stumble through, and the player characters are all so cute. Certainly cute enough to have a lot of marketability.
Until now, that is. After the game’s developer revealed that the Fall Guys jellybeans are officially 1.83 meters, Twitter user lalalalack was confronted with a vision that, mercifully, few other Fall Guys fans seemed to see. This nightmare manifests as a piece of art that depicts the adorable jellybeans, who bounce around and wear silly costumes, as grim, heavily muscled figures, grouped together in an ominously hunched posture to suggest that they are moments away from pouncing. This terrible vision awaits below.
There’s obviously a lot to take issue with in this image, from the jelly beans’ taut muscles to their uniformly blank stares. Those featureless faces, which are unchanged from their appearance in the actual game, look much more terrifying on this gaggle of rainbow bodybuilders than they do on the sweet, pudgy little jelly beans fans are used to. The bright color scheme actually seems to add to the horror; they’d look even more frightening chasing someone down a dark alleyway, simply because of how incongruous they’d be. These menacing figures even prompted the official Fall Guys Twitter account to weigh in, emphasizing that this was not what it wanted fans to picture when it revealed the height of the jelly beans.
An internet following as big as the one Fall Guys has earned is bound to bring in all kinds of fans who’ll interact with the game in unpredictable ways. Some of these fans are ones a game might not want at all; Fall Guys has a rather notorious hacking problem on its hands, for instance. But Fall Guys’ large fan base is bound to see a lot of creative fanart, too. Lack has produced a very striking piece of artwork, and as terrifying as it is, it shows a lot of love and appreciation for the game. Fall Guys has become a cultural icon in a very small amount of time, and fan works like this one prove just how enduring it is.
Fall Guys is available now on PlayStation 4 and PC.
