What is Sengol?
Sengol comes from a Tamil word “Semmai” means justice.
It was a scepter of gold and silver, decorated with various precious stones. Sengol is 5 feet long and carries a golden orb on his head. The sphere is engraved with the image of Nandi, the precious cow of Lord Shiva.
Sengol was a powerful symbol of the Chola kings’ power and their commitment to justice.
They are sending a message from the Information Office “He was blessed by the high priests of a leading Dharmic Mutt in Tamil Nadu. Nandi, with her steadfast gaze as a follower of “Nyaya”, is hand-carved on the top.”
What is the meaning of Sengol?
Sengol is considered a symbol of justice, transfer of power and good governance. It was handed over to India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on 14 August 1947. It marked the transfer of power from the British government to India.
On May 28, after a gap of more than 75 years, the same Sengol will be marked as a symbol of the transfer of power.
The scepter is a reminder of India’s rich history and culture. He came from the Chola dynasty, one of the most important and powerful dynasties in Indian history.
Interior Minister Amit Shah said, “Even after 75 years of independence, most of the people in India are unaware of the fact that India is transferring power by handing over Sengola to Pt Jawaharlal Nehru.
“It was a special occasion on the night of August 14, 1947, the celebration of India’s independence. That night, Jawaharlal Nehru received ‘Sengol’ from the Adheenams (Priests) of ThiruvaduthuraiAdheenams (Mutta) in Tamil Nadu, who had specially come on this occasion.
“That was exactly the moment when power passed from the British to the Indians. What we celebrate is true independence marked by the very moment of the ‘Sengola’ surrender.”
When will the Government establish Sengol?
Sengol is now kept in the Nehru Museum Gallery, Allahabad. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to choose it as the national symbol of Amrit Kaal according to the Department of Information and Communication.
Sengol will be installed in the new Parliament building in Delhi on May 28, 2023 and there will be a similar ceremony with 20 Adheenas (priests) presenting Sengol to the Prime Minister. Furthermore, a priest associated with Sengol’s development will also be present at the ceremony.
