After recovering from a broken leg to earn a place in England’s squad for this month’s Women’s World Cup, Manchester City defender Esme Morgan says a year’s layoff through injury has turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
After breaking her lower leg in September 2021, 22-year-old Morgan, who has earned five appearances for the Lionesses since making her debut in October 2022, has missed most of City’s season as well as England’s European Championship-winning campaign. However, she claimed she felt renewed when she returned to the field.
There are a lot of ups and downs because at the beginning of the rehabilitation I had unrealistic expectations of going to the Euros. At a recent media day in England in St. George’s Park, Morgan told reporters: “I wish someone had informed me, ‘No way.
“I focused on the World Cup as soon as I got back from it and felt confident in myself. The World Cup was definitely the goal I had in mind when I came back and I found myself feeling better than ever.
“Because I missed football so much, taking a year off rejuvenated my mentality a bit. Maybe changing my perspective was a benefit in disguise.
As the fourth-placed team and defending European champions at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Morgan was relieved to hear from England manager Sarina Wiegman that she had been called up to the Lionesses. According to Morgan, “I had a deep conviction that I had done enough (to be invited).”

Players were given a timeline for Wiegman’s call and announcement.
“I was nervous so I thought I shouldn’t be on the phone because I’m going to jump out of my skin when it goes off, so my phone was on vibrate all morning,” Morgan added with a giggle. Asked if she could remember the last time she had more than two weeks off in a year, Morgan echoed teammate and captain Millie Bright, who also expressed gratitude for the time off she had to take after a knee injury in March.
“Tough. I’ve been doing it for a while but it can be challenging when you’re competing in back-to-back competitions for your clubs,” he noted.
“With how competitive the game is becoming, those are the requirements now. There is still work to be done on the schedule to ensure we can participate in every competition and hold tournaments back to back. Because we are not automatons, we need rest to do our best for the fans, our clubs and our nations.
The Lionesses, who finished fourth in France four years ago and won bronze in Canada 2015, face Haiti on July 22 in Brisbane to open their World Cup run. Their opponents in group D are China and Denmark.
