Erana James was born on Tuesday, February 16, 1999 (age 21 years; as of 2020), and hails from Whangarei, New Zealand. At the age of ten, she moved to Wellington, New Zealand. She did her schooling from Wellington Girls’ College. At the age of fourteen, she took a professional acting course for teenagers at Rata Studios, a performing arts school in Wellington. Later, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Te Reo Māori (the Polynesian language spoken by the Māori people) from Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University of Wellington.
