On 12 July 2022, Eoma Rajapaksa fled the country with her husband Gotabaya Rajapaksa amid violent protests due to the economic crisis. Multiple sources claimed that the pair fled the country to the Maldives in a Sri Lankan Air Force Antonov An-32 aircraft. From Maldives the couple went to Singapore and from there the couple went to Thailand. In August 2022, several reports surfaced claiming that Ioma and Gotabaya may return to Sri Lanka in the first week of September as they were allotted visas to Thailand for only 90 days. The media also reported that another reason for their return could be the incredible amount of money required to live in an expensive place like Thailand, where they have 24/7 VVIP security around them.
