Who is M Visvesvaraya?
M Visvesvaraya is considered the first civil engineer, administrator and statesman who served as the 19th Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918. He was born on 15 September 1861 in Mysore (now Karnataka). The most popular person in the south Indian state of Karnataka, MV is known as the ‘creator of modern Mysore’ for his exemplary contribution to engineering and planning. In 1955, he was awarded the prestigious Bharat Ratna for his contribution to the Kingdom of Mysore and the Republic of India.

In the early years of his career, Visvesvaraya served as an employee of the Government of British India, operating in the Middle Eastern provinces of the Bombay Presidency and other British possessions. Later he got a job in Hyderabad State. After retirement, he continued his engineering career in the Kingdom of Mysore and also tried his luck in administration and the state.
Every year 15th September is celebrated as National Engineers Day to highlight his key role in building modern India, especially in the field of infrastructure development. The day serves as a tribute to his outstanding contributions to the field of engineering and a reminder of the vital role that engineers play in shaping India’s progress and development.

Major Contributions of Sir M Visvesaray
Sir MV has implemented several complex projects and achieved outstanding infrastructure results during his engineering career. Some of his major contributions to society include:
- Sir MV’s exemplary irrigation and engineering methods were a lifesaver for flood prone areas.
- Automatic dams were invented and improved by Sir MV in 1903 and were installed on the Khadakwasla reservoir in Pune.
- Later, under his guidance, these automatic dams were also installed at Tigra Dam in Gwalior and Krishnaraja Sagara Dam in Mysuru.
- He developed a superior sewage system to control the floods caused by the Musi River in 1908 in Hyderabad.
- He helped plan the highway connecting Tirumala and Tirupati. He also established the Government College of Engineering in 1917, which was later renamed the Visvesvaraya University College of Engineering.
He has also written several books documenting his experience and engineering skills. His three major books are Memoirs of My Working Life, Planned Economy for India and Reconstruction of India.
