1. Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was born on 15 September 1861 in the village of Muddenahalli in Karnataka. At the age of 15, he lost his father, who was a Sanskrit scholar.
2. He completed his early education in Chikkaballapur and then moved to Bangalore for his higher education. In Pune, he joined the Faculty of Science to study engineering and was ranked first in the 1883 LCE and FCE examinations.

3. The Government of Bombay offered him the job of Assistant Engineer in Nasik. As an engineer, he successfully realized various projects. In fact, he was the mastermind behind the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam in Mysore.
4. He patented and installed the irrigation system with water dams in the Khadakvasla reservoir near Pune. This was done to increase the level of food supply and storage to the highest levels called the ‘block system’ in 1903.
5. In 1912, the Maharaja of Mysore appointed him Dewan. He persistently worked for the overall development of the country.
6. During his tenure as Dewan, several industries were established including a sandal oil factory, a soap factory, a metal factory, a chrome tannery factory and thus the Bhadravati iron and steel factory.
7. In 1917, he helped found the Government College of Engineering in Bangalore, later named the Visvesvaraya College of Engineering in his honour.
8. In 1915, the British made him a Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire (KCIE) for his work and contribution to society.
9. In 1955, he was awarded India’s highest award ‘Bharat Ratna’ by the Government of India for his tireless work in the field of engineering and education.
10. He was also known as “Father of Modern State of Mysore”. He passed away in 1962, but his achievements and contributions are remembered and celebrated to this day.
11. His birth anniversary is celebrated as National Engineers Day in Sri Lanka and Tanzania.
