On previously saying he wishes all his films were silent: “I was half joking. But I love the silence. It’s nice to not have any pressure to use words to communicate. “There is something wonderful about being able to speak only with your eyes and your body.”
On dodging cars while filming: “Have you seen the things I’ve done in the movies? In comparison, crossing a road is not scary.”
On Yorgos Lanthimos teaching him photography: “A few years ago, Yorgos became interested in film photography. He began to develop his own impressions of it and taught me. We started with a makeshift darkroom in his bathroom, but in recent years he built a professional darkroom in his studio in Athens. He practically learned how to develop film by watching YouTube videos.”
On his creative partnership with Yorgos: “We went through contact sheets together. We tend to agree on what photos we like and what we don’t like. In general, we agree on almost everything.” Lanthimos interrupted: “Sometimes we disagree on small details. That is our pattern.” Stone continued: “But we didn’t fight. We have a way of solving things. And we learn from each other. Or, at least, I learn from Yorgos.”
