But when the police begin to discover that May’s relationship with the cult is far more sinister than they imagined, they aren’t even satisfied. Meanwhile, Mae’s attachment to Suzanne is much healthier than it seems.

rant . screen Talk to Deschanel and Arthur about what attracted them devil ohiowhether they hang out on set and how much they like true crime stories.

Screen Rant: I love this show because I’m a true crime and horror fan. Emily, what interests you most about this story?

Emily Deschanel: I just find it fascinating. Especially my role of Susan? Why she does what she does, I find it interesting. In fact, it’s based on a true story it was inspired by – there are a lot of differences, but the basic elements of the story still happen. This fascinates me. Cults are really interesting to me, and I like to feel a little scared. Interesting.

Especially delving into Suzanne’s personality and her psyche; why does she do what she does. I find this fascinating. I want to understand it and participate in it and make a difference.

Madeleine Arthur: Yeah, cult enchantment. [That] It’s real and loosely based on real events that intrigued me right away. And then reading the script, knowing that Mae is such a complex and dynamic character, as an actress, I always felt like I was looking for a character. I’m really excited to join and play with her.

It involves a lot of preparation and I love a challenge. Mae is a challenge, that’s for the best.

What to prepare? How did you get into the cult mentality?

Madeleine Arthur: Cult Psychology! [Laughs] Well, you know them; you read about them, and you can stand up. I did some sensory and kinesthetic work, and watched movies with hit themes. Anything I can tap into will make Mae feel as fully aware as possible. That’s exactly what I did.

The two of you spend a lot of time together. What have you been doing to build and build relationships on your screen?

Emily Deschanel: We were always joking around because we were so scared to go out together. The whole cast, we’re all scared because of COVID. We were told not to do anything. I was talking to another friend who was doing another Netflix job and he said, “Yeah, we had dinner.” I was like, “What? Arrange a dinner party? Not fair!”

We don’t hang out together often. But we had rehearsals before that, then we had Zoom rehearsals and some live rehearsals. Once we started filming, we had time to get off the camera and talk. I think we mostly do a lot of things ourselves and then shoot the scenes together. We didn’t spend much time connecting. Basically, it didn’t happen until we finished filming.

Madeleine Arthur: Yes. All of this happened after the fact.

Emily Deschanel: In the end, we went to dinner once, had a late breakfast with the cast, then we went for a walk. But it happened at the end, after we had filmed everything.

In fact, we just met and explored Suzanne and I in a way. Because they’ve known each other since the beginning, we’re getting to know each other and getting to know each other. Our characters knew each other on set, so we did.

Madeleine Arthur: We complement each other, don’t we?

Which of you two is a true crime lover?

Madeleine Arthur: You know, we’re not really talking about that. Maybe Emily — you say you watch a lot of true crime documentaries. I have seen some, but not many.

Emily Deschanel: I listen to a lot of real crime podcasts and watch some shows. Honestly, I used to watch it more, but then having kids made me more sensitive to some things; it’s so annoying. I like it though. I don’t know, I don’t want to compete in any way.

Madeleine Arthur: I can give you that medal.

Emily Deschanel: If you’re going to give it up, I’ll take it. I don’t know how much you like it.

Madeleine Arthur: I love it. I like it very much. I just need to take the time to listen to the True Crime podcast.

I want to ask what is your hobby

Emily Deschanel: S Town. I would still consider this a crime podcast. Live and die in Los Angeles. These are my favorites. On my corpse, this is the first entry [one]- That was before the documentary Tiger King on Netflix, of course I watched it. Before the documentary, they talked about it all season long.

I told a friend about them and I texted her non-stop. Like, “Oh wait! I forgot this.” There are many more, but I’m sure I’ll remember them when I’m done.
