Elden Ring: Why Hyetta Is Eating Eyeballs

Hyetta the Finger Maiden may appear to be one of Elden Ring‘s more benevolent characters, but there is more to her than meets the eye. Indeed, the Shabriri Grapes she requests the Tarnished retrieve for her are eyes themselves – eyes that have turned squishy like delectable fruits. Her grotesque fascination with devouring spoiled human remains can quickly turn her innocent personality as a Finger Maiden in need of help into a disturbing facade covering up dark intentions.

Hyetta plays the fool when presented with the reality of what Shabriri Grapes are in Elden Ring. She merely asks for these “fruits” because they guide her toward a mysterious, distant light that leads the Tarnished to believe she is seeking something regarding the Golden Order. She even gags when discovering that the grapes she consumes are the human eyes of other Tarnished who have attempted to make her their Finger Maiden. Nevertheless, she knows more than she lets on, as she is aware of the names of Shabriri Grapes and, later, when she asks for a Fingerprint Grape, she knows how these pseudo fruits were formed: “They’re special grapes which only grow on those who’ve been clasped by the burnt Fingers.”

These burnt Fingers in Elden Ring are actually the Three Fingers of the Frenzied Flame – the antithetical force of the Two Fingers and their Finger Maidens. Hyetta is thus a servant to the heretical power of the Three Fingers and eats the grapes to return to them. She supports their mission to destroy the world in a flame storm of chaos, one which players can cause in Elden Ring‘s Lord of Frenzied Flame ending. Though destroying all life may seem villainous to the point of losing sense, Hyetta and the Three Finger do have their reasons.

Why Hyetta Wants The World To Burn In Elden Ring

Near the end of Hyetta’s questline, the Tarnished will find themselves deep beneath the surface of the Lands Between – far away from anywhere the Two Fingers would approve. This location is known as the Frenzied Flame Proscription, where those who wish to be embraced by the Three Fingers and absorb Elden Ring‘s Frenzied Flame can do so. Hyetta will award the Tarnished for being embraced with her loyalty as a maiden and explains the reasoning behind the Frenzied Flame’s goals: “All that there is came from the One Great,” but then the “Greater Will made a mistake,” and so “what was borrowed must be returned. Melt it all away, with the yellow chaos flame. Until all is One again.

Thus, Hyetta believes that she must help destroy the world to bring an end to the suffering brought on by the Greater Will. Indeed, the Greater Will is the cause for much strife in the Lands Between. Perhaps becoming Elden Ring‘s Lord of Frenzied Flame is not so evil after all.
