Egypt Responds To Netflix’s ‘Queen Cleopatra’ Controversy, Insists Ruler Was ‘Fair-Skinned’

The controversy over Netflix queen cleopatra the limited series is getting more dramatic.

Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, also known as the SCA, has ruled on the ordeal, reacting to Adele James’ first appearance as the country’s infamous ruler.

If you don’t know, many academics, historians, and even fans of the Queen have weighed in on the fact that Adele, who is a black British actress, was cast as Cleopatra.

For centuries, Cleopatra has always been depicted as lighter-skinned, and historians have argued that she was born of European descent and confirmed that she was a Macedonian-Greek on her father’s side, Ptolemy XII.

According to Deadline, the SCA issued a statement regarding the dispute.

“The Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities confirms that Queen Cleopatra had fair skin and Hellenistic (Greek) features,” he said in a statement, shared with the website of Egypt’s Ministry of Culture and Antiquities.

SCA Secretary General Mostafa Waziri also spoke about “historical falsification” in the statement.

“The appearance of the heroine is a falsification of Egyptian history and a blatant historical fallacy, especially since the film is classified as a documentary film and not a dramatic work, which requires those in charge of its production to investigate the accuracy and to rely on historical data and scientific facts to ensure that history and civilizations are not falsified,” he said.

Waziri continued, declaring that the backlash against the show was not about Adele, or towards people of African descent, but about how Cleopatra would be portrayed.

“The rejection experienced by the film before its release derives from the defense of the story of the queen ‘Cleopatra VII’, which is an important and authentic part of the ancient history of Egypt, and away from all ethnic racism, with full respect for African civilizations and for our brothers on the African continent that unites us all”.

Previously, Netflix defended the choice to portray Cleopatra as being of “mixed heritage.”

“The creative choice to cast an actor of mixed ancestry to play Cleopatra is a nod to the centuries-old conversation about the race of rulers,” the streamer noted. “During the time of her reign, the population of Egypt was multicultural and multiracial. Cleopatra’s race was unlikely to be documented, and the identities of her mother and her paternal grandparents were unknown. Some speculate that she was a native Egyptian woman, while others say that she was Greek.”
