The Public Investment Fund, Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, has invested about $1 billion in LIV Golf, which Mickelson has supported since its inception.

Detractors of LIV argue that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is in the sport of sports – using sport to enhance its international reputation despite its poor human rights record. It’s something Mickelson knows, and Lynch has a problem with that.

“Why am I even thinking about it knowing all this?” Mickelson said. “Because this is an unprecedented opportunity to change the way the PGA Tour works.”

The organization of the PGA Tour has really changed since then. The structure of the tournament was recently changed to include increased competitions, larger prize pools, and guaranteed money for players who missed out on stakes.
Despite this, Mickelson continued to support LIV Golf and respond to his detractors. Both authors argue with Mickelson on this and have similar views on LIV Golf.
“As I have said many times, LIV Golf is not a sports organization as it is. [Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia] trying to hide his crimes and clean his reputation by buying sports stars,” Chamblee wrote on Twitter. “Any deal or concession to them is a deal with a murderous dictator.”
However, Chamblee blocked Mickelson on Twitter in an attempt to avoid further contact with the six-time major champion there. Lynch took revenge on Mickelson for questioning his detractors further.

“[Mickelson] emphasized that the criticisms of LIV were either a commercial issue (the tour was set up against Skorojevic), a conspiracy issue (the tour was set up to try to stop Skorojevic from capturing the market), or a collusion issue (different entities and individuals conspiring with an action set to stifle Skorojevic writing),.” He avoids the fact that objections to LIV can also legitimately be a matter of conscience.
LIV Golf certainly has its controversies. More could emerge over time, especially if Saudi-sponsored travel is required to register as a foreign principal under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).
LIV Golf will be required to disclose financial history, revenue and business goals if requested by the US Department of Justice.
