Dustin Lance Black’s Court Day for U.K. Nightclub Altercation Trial Did Not Go as Planned

Dustin Lance Black appeared in court in London on Tuesday (August 8), but the day did not go as planned.

The 49-year-old Oscar-winning screenwriter, who is married to Olympic diver Tom Daley, is facing common assault charges after a nightclub incident with UK television personality Teddy Edwardes.

Teddy says Dustin threw a drink over her head and she reciprocated by giving him “a little tap on the head.” According to Variety, Teddy actually posted about the incident on social media, allegedly writing, “I went out for a couple of quiet drinks with my friends last night, nothing crazy, and I bumped into Tom Daley and his husband in Soho, who… pretty much unprovoked he threw an entire drink over me in Freedom. I didn’t have a drink to throw back so I did choose violence, it wasn’t that violent, he got a little tap on the back of the head.”

In September 2022, Dustin revealed he had suffered a “serious” head injury and fans believe this is the incident he’s referring to.

So, why didn’t the court day go as planned?

Dustin flew to London from the U.S. just for the court day and when he and his legal team arrived, they discovered that the court room was double-booked. The trial, which was only expected to last one day, was then moved to another room after an hour, according to Variety.

The prosecutors who are bringing the case against Dustin then realized they lost an important file and now the trial has been rescheduled for early November.

Dustin‘s team tried to have the case dismissed, questioning whether it was worth it to “take another day of the court’s time at significant expense to the public purse and to the defendant.” The judge agreed that there isn’t a strong case against him, but decided to move forward with the trial.
