After training at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse, Dru Joyce III is the type of coach who can challenge his players to a push-up competition.
Joyce, 37, reunites with Keith Dambrot, who coached him in high school in St. Vincent-St. Mary and was in college at the University of Akron, when he was hired as deputy head coach at Duquesne in May. Joyce and Dambrot are a successful player-coach team.
First, Joyce is a key member of St. Vincent-St. Team Mary Dambrot won consecutive Ohio High School Athletes Association state championships in 2000 and 2001.
LeBron James was Joyce’s fighting Irish teammate, another Akron native who later became one of Dambrot’s young basketball students.
James and Joyce are childhood best friends who always wanted to play basketball together. In St. Vincent-St. Mary, their dream came true.
James stated through his journalist that Dru was always the frontrunner. He was always very meticulous and dedicated to the game and getting better, even when we were young. He has a bad streak and a burning desire, and that’s the quality that makes him a good player.
He would bring it in every day, and that’s what drew us all in. I always respect him because he never wastes a day trying to be better.
After graduating from high school, James and Joyce separated. The first was picked by Cleveland in the 2003 NBA draft while Joyce played college basketball at Akron under Dambrot, who was later appointed Zips’ head coach.
By the time Joyce ended his college career in 2007, he was on two All-MAC teams and set an Akron assist record with a total of 503 assists. In 2019, Joyce was with Dambrot inducted into the Akron Zips Athletics Hall of Fame. Dambrot has a 13-year track record of 305-139 and three MAC titles.
After graduating from university, Joyce began a 12-year competitive career abroad, which took him to Germany, Poland, Russia and France.
He retired in 2019 as the Bundesliga’s best in terms of assists, because he spent most of his ten seasons playing in Germany.
Joyce transitioned seamlessly into coaching as his playing days ended, working as an assistant at Cleveland State from 2019-22.
Dennis Gates’ CSU Vikings have consecutively won the Horizon League championship in 2021-2022 with Joyce as coach. Joyce has formed a close relationship with the guards he coaches because of his time with the Duquesne team.
