Dr. Sunil Shroff is an Indian urologist, transplant surgeon and a social entrepreneur. Sunil, a campaigner for organ donation in India, is the founder and managing trustee of the Mohan Foundation; A non-profit organization promoting organ donation and transplantation in India since 1997.

Dr. Sunil Shroff was born in 1953 (age 67 years; as of 2020) in Sahibganj, Bihar and brought up in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He studied at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Gill Nagar, Chennai from 1965 to 1970. After that, he took MBBS and MS degrees from Prince of Wales Medical College (now Patna Medical College) and then went to UK in 1983 for further studies. There, he achieved Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, UK in 1986, followed by specialization in urology, andrology and kidney transplantation from the Institute of Urology and Nephrology, London. After that, he did a post-graduation course in Urology from University College of London (UCL) and started his career in the medical field.

livelihood

After completing his formal education in the medical field, he worked in various senior positions in the UK; Worked as lecturer, registrar and senior registrar at St. Peter’s Hospital, Middlesex Hospital and Royal London Hospital in London and then returned to India in 1995. After returning to India, he headed the newly formed Department of Urology and Renal. Transplantation at Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute (SRMC&RI) in Porur, Chennai from 1995 to 2015. While serving there, he trained 18 urologists and 40 allied health care specialists and many other nurses over the years. In April 2015, he started working as Senior Consultant Urologist and Transplant Surgeon at Madras Medical Mission Hospital.

Mohan Foundation

Sunil Shroff conceived the Mohan Foundation in 1996 and began operating it in August 1997. Through counseling and facilitating organ and tissue donation, Dr. Shroff’s NGO has done a revolutionary work in India and has helped 11,609 people till 2020. The initiative, which started in Chennai, has spread across India and as of 2020 has offices in Jaipur, Nagpur, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai.
