Sankarasubramanian K was born in 1964 (age 59 years; as of 2023) in a small village in Tamil Nadu, India. In 1986, he earned a degree in physics from the Bangalore University. He holds a PhD in Physics from Bangalore University through the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bengaluru.

Scientist

He is a senior solar scientist at the U R Rao Satellite Centre (URSC), Bengaluru. He has done most of his research on the solar magnetic field, optics, and instrumentation. He has significantly contributed to many ISRO missions, including AstroSat, Chandrayaan-1, and Chandrayaan-2. He is also the head of the Space Astronomy Group (SAG) of URSC, which develops scientific payloads for ISRO’s missions like Aditya-L1 and XPoSat. For India’s debut in solar exploration with the mission ‘Aditya-L1,’ he was designated as the principal investigator for an X-ray payload. He also leads the Aditya-L1 Science Working Group, a team involving members from various Indian institutes dedicated to solar science research. On 2 September 2023, Aditya L1 launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
