Doja Cat delivered one of the most distinctive looks of her career when she attended the Schiaparelli Haute Couture Spring Summer 2023 runway show during Paris Fashion Week earlier this year, and she did it while she was sick.
The 27-year-old “Say So” pop star arrived at the fashion show decked out in more than 30,000 red Swarovski crystals that were applied by makeup icon Pat McGrath. The application process took several hours.
During a recent interview, Doja reflected on her iconic look and revealed what was going on behind the scenes that makes her look even more stunning.

talking to the officialDoja explained that she had instantly accepted the idea when it was presented to her, but that it was a challenge.
“I didn’t realize I had to get up at four in the morning [the day of the show] arrive at five or something like that”, he admitted. “So we got there, and I didn’t realize until I sat in the chair that I had gastroenteritis. So I had gotten really sick.”
He pushed his way through, saying he could “feel the twist of a knife” in his stomach.
“The whole team was very sweet. The entire glam team was very supportive, sensitive and kind. He was great and very professional. I was trying to joke around and downplay the situation, but as time went on, it only got worse,” she recalled.
Doja went on to say, “My stomach felt like it had a leaf on it and it was spinning at 100 miles an hour. I have never felt worse pain than that, and on one of the most important days of my life! So I was full of crazy emotions and feelings.”
Pat helped her by bringing her some ginger ale to settle her stomach, and Doja kept her calm as a glam crew surrounded her and covered her in red paint and glitter before gluing the individual crystals to her body.
“I am very, very proud of him,” she said of the look, adding that she was “willing to sacrifice my comfort” in exchange for having an idea in her head.
