The owners of Doja Cat‘s social media fan pages are speaking out to explain their decision to deactivate their accounts.
The pages were deactivated after Doja called out her fans for using the name “Kittenz” to refer to themselves.
“My fans don’t name themselves s–t,” she wrote in a since-deleted post on Threads. “If you call yourself a ‘kitten’ or f–king ‘kittenz’ that means you need to get off your phone and get a job and help your parents with the house.”
Doja said even more troubling things, which you can read in our previous post.
Head inside to see what the fans said about deactivating their pages…
Several of the singer’s top fan pages – including Doja HQ and The Kittens Room – deactivated their accounts amid the comments.
Amir, the owner of @TheKittensRoom account, told NBC News that “artists don’t owe fans anything outside of surface level respect.”
“It’s a 50/50 thing, you know? I respect you for what you do, and you respect me in return for that support,” he added. “Deactivating our accounts was really us letting it be known that the support can stop for her anytime. We do so much campaigning and promotion for her that isn’t worth it if her comments are how she really feels.”
Amir added, “It just felt like such an out of nowhere thing for her to say considering her attitudes towards it just last year were positive. When we met last year, she expressed love for the page.”
Jamun, the owner of @DojaNews, said, “She needs to just come out and apologize and be sincere.”
Meta has confirmed how many followers Doja has lost since her comments were made.
