State Bank of India is a government-owned corporation established in 1955. In 1984, Dinesh Khara was appointed as a probationary officer by the State Bank of India (SBI). During his tenure at SBI, he was the Managing Director (MD) of Global Banking and Subsidiaries, MD of State Bank Associates and Subsidiaries and Chief General Manager of Bhopal Circle Branch. As Chief General Manager, he was in charge of approximately 1,400 branches.
Dinesh also worked in the overseas expansion wing of the international banking group and is credited with helping in the acquisition of Indian Ocean International Bank Mauritius (now SBI Mauritius). He was also posted to Chicago for an overseas assignment. He also served as the Managing Director and CEO of SBI Funds Management Pvt. Ltd. Ltd. (SBIMF). As MD and CEO, he led the company to become the fifth largest mutual fund in India. He was made the Managing Director of SBI on 9 August 2016 for three years. In 2019, after a performance review, his tenure was extended by 2 years. He is in charge of banking functions including international banking, corporate banking and treasury operations. He is credited with the successful merger of five associate banks of SBI and Bharatiya Mahila Bank. His initiatives took SBI to the top 50 banks globally. In 2017, Dinesh and Rajneesh Kumar (former SBI chairman who was the MD at that time) had applied to become chairman; While Rajneesh was selected for the role, it was decided that Dinesh would henceforth become chairman. Although he was due to retire in 2021, Dinesh was appointed as the Chairman of SBI on 7 October 2020 for a period of three years.

The Finance Ministry issued a statement which read,
Dinesh Kumar Khara has been appointed as the Chairman of the Bank for a period of 3 years from the date he assumes charge of the post on or after 7.10.2020 or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
In October 2023, the government extended his tenure as Speaker till August 2024, when Dinesh would have turned 63.

threat of kidnapping
In 2022, during Dinesh Khara’s tenure as chairman, his assistant received a threatening call from a man who identified himself as Mohammad Zia Ul Ali. The caller asked the bank to sanction a loan of Rs. 10 lakhs. If he did not do so, the caller threatened to kidnap and kill the SBI Chairman. They also threatened to bomb the corporate office of the bank. The assistant security manager of the bank lodged a complaint with the Mumbai Police. They traced the call to West Bengal and sent a team of Mumbai Police officers to arrest the caller.
