Dilip Chhabria is a famous Indian car designer and the founder of DC Design. He is known for doing car modifications for many celebrities including many Bollywood actors. Their cars have also been featured in several Bollywood films such as Tarzan: The Wonder Car (2004), and Dilwale (2015). He is the person behind India’s first sports car DC Avanti.

Dilip Chhabria was born in 1954 (age 66 years; as in 2020) in Mumbai. He belonged to an affluent family and his father was a businessman dealing in electronic parts manufacturing. As a child, Dilip Chhabria used to draw cars and bikes on the walls of his home and on the back of his notebooks. When he saw an advertisement for a design school in California, he decided to pursue car designing. Following his dream and his love for cars, Dilip Chhabria completed his Bachelor of Commerce and applied to the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, where he studied Transportation Design.

livelihood
After completing a course in transportation design from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, Chhabria joined General Motors and started working there. He soon realized that working there would not give him the growth and opportunities he needed to become a designer. He decided to come back to India to work in his father’s factory in Marol, Mumbai. With a team of three people, Dilip took a small factory space and made ring-shaped horns for the Premier Padmini cars. This aftermarket product did wonders in the market and sold for Rs. 40 per piece. The construction cost on the horn was Rs. Rs 8 per piece, and this helped him get the necessary encouragement and funding for his first project. In 1992, he modified his own Gypsy and it was successful. With this success, Dilip went on to sign a deal with Mahindra & Mahindra where he worked on the Armada and Bolero cars. Meanwhile, he was working with the company and it led to the development of Scorpio. Dilip Chhabria believes that Mahindra Thar is the most customizable SUV vehicle available in the Indian market. According to him the most difficult project was the Porsche 911 because he believes that the way the car is designed is perfect and it is difficult to find out whether the car needs any modifications or not.

controversies
- Raghuraj Pratap Singh, a six-time MLA from Uttar Pradesh and politician, had filed an FIR against Chhabria in 2016 for not delivering the vehicle on order. The politician had given a contract worth Rs. Dilip Chhabria was given Rs 1.24 crore in 2015 to modify ISUZU 4500 WB van. Later, Dilip Chhabria refuted the claims, saying that he had no knowledge about the order. Responding to this allegation, Chhabria said,
His statement about us not providing the vehicle is baseless and false. We have worked with veterans around the world for the last 25 years. This vehicle has been lying ready for the last seven months. We have been writing to them to collect the vehicle, but they have not responded.”
- On 28 December 2020, Chhabria was arrested by the Mumbai Crime Branch in connection with the charges of cheating and forgery leveled against him. According to Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Milind Bharambe, Chhabria used 90 DC Avanti vehicles manufactured by Dilip Chhabria Design Pvt Ltd (DDCPL) to finance the fraud by obtaining multiple loans averaging Rs. 42 lakhs against each. Allegedly, to obtain loans from non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), the company would pose as customers for its own manufactured cars, and these vehicles would later be sold to customers through fraudulent means; Moreover, to avail more loan, the company will register the vehicles with two or sometimes three RTOs of different states. This fraudulent tactic came into limelight when a customer of DC Avanti Car, who had registered his car with the Tamil Nadu RTO, was challenged by the police, during which the police found that the car was also registered with the Haryana RTO. Later the complainant filed a case against Chhabria in Mumbai after which the Mumbai Police arrested him.

- His creative and unique approach has extended to his personal life as he has named his children Bonito Chhabria (son) and Minika Chhabria (daughter).
- Dilip Chhabria was given the opportunity to work with Aston Martin when the company asked him to design their show car, the Aston Martin Vantage. In 2003, James Bond designed the Aston Martin DB-8 and since then, his designs have been admired globally.
