As a defensive midfielder, he is a highly recognized player. Dick began his career by joining ADO Den Haag in 1966. For the club, his first appearance came in 1967, at the age of 21 and he made his professional debut for the club on 21 May 1967, aged 21. Additionally, he made his professional debut with the club on May 21, 1967 for the team against GVAV. He scored 7 goals in 147 appearances. He is also one of the members of the team that won the 2008 UEFA Cup.

Advocaat was a physical education teacher and became involved in training in 1981, offered by his brother, Jaap. After four years with the team, he moved to HFC Haarlem in 1987, where he managed for about two years. Advocaat then transferred to Schiedamse Voetbal Vereniging in 1989 as coach, under his supervision the team won the Eerste Divisie (1989-90) and Eredivisie (1990-1991) champion seasons.
Advocaat joined Dordrecht in 1991 and managed the team for a year. He re-signed for PSV in December 1994 and the team’s first match was against Ajax on 1 January 1995, when he became coach. Advocaat trained the two players Luc Nilis and Ronaldo. While he was coach, the team was honored with the Eredivisie title and the following year qualified for the UEFA Champions League.
