Dewald Brewis was born on Tuesday, 29 April 2003 (age 19 years; as of 2022) in Johannesburg, South Africa. He did his schooling at the Afrikaans Hoar Senskool in Pretoria, which has also been the alma mater of de Villiers, Faf du Plessis, Jacques Rudolph, Heino Kuhn, Neil Wagner and Kruger van Wyk. In an interview, Dewald revealed that he has always been a fan of cricket and started playing it in his backyard with his elder brother and his father.

Dewald Brewis is a right-handed batsman and leg-break bowler who has been a part of teams like Mumbai Indians, Northern Under-13 and South Africa Under-19. He was signed by Northerns in April 2021, ahead of the 2021–22 domestic cricket season in South Africa. He made his Twenty20 debut for South Africa Under-19 in the 2021–22 CSA Provincial T20 knock-out tournament on 8 October 2021. Scored 46 runs in 25 balls at a strike rate of 184, which included two fours and four sixes. In November 2021, he was included in South Africa’s squad for the 2022 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in the West Indies. He performed exemplary in the tournament and scored two centuries and three half-centuries, two of which fell 3 and 4 runs short of the century. During the match between RCB and Mumbai Indians in IPL 2022, Brewis dismissed Virat Kohli on his first ball in IPL and made Virat miss his first half-century of IPL 2022 by just 2 runs.
