Derrick Yearby Was Arrested For Assaulting Government Commissioner Greg Chew

On August 7, San Francisco police announced that they had arrested Derrick Yearby, the perpetrator of the racist attack on lifelong public servant Greg Chew. After his arrest, Yearby was taken to the San Francisco County Jail. Gregory ‘Greg’ Chew, a former Commissioner for Immigrant Rights, has served on several city committees and is a prominent leader in the Asian-American community in San Francisco. Greg Chew said he was walking on Folsom Street and Third Street on Tuesday, August 2, when a bicyclist appeared and suddenly hit him. The attack left him with swollen eyes and an injured left shoulder.

San Francisco Police Department Public Information Officer Kathryn Winters told reporters that police were fortunate to have a large amount of photo and video evidence of the incident, allowing for a quick arrest.

She stated:

“In this case, officers were able to quickly locate and identify the culprit. So there are great police officers out there doing decent police work.”

Following the event, Greg Chew claimed nothing was taken away, leading to accusations that it was a hate crime. On the other hand, Yearby is yet to be charged. Investigators are continuing to investigate the case.

Greg Chew is the target of an unprovoked attack.

The San Francisco Police Department said in a statement released Sunday that officers assigned to the Southern District responded August 2 after receiving a complaint of a serious assault. Greg Chew reported to police that he was beaten and knocked down by an unknown offender. He also remembers falling to the ground and losing consciousness after the attack, only to later discover his money and cell phone were still in his pocket. He then said that the attacker said nothing to him and did not rob him.

According to a press release sent by the Office of Supervisor Matt Dorsey:

“San Francisco should have no place for this type of violence, which in recent years has disproportionately targeted the elderly in our AAPI community.”

He also said in the statement that SF police recorded a 567 percent increase in Asian hate crimes in 2021 alone. According to Dorsey’s office, Yearby was taken to the San Francisco County Jail, where he is being held on suspicion of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, assault with a force that is likely to result in adult injury, and aggravated assault on an adult.
